US Eastern Fleet

To all who missed out this past Sunday.

Weather:  Sunny, 78 degrees
Winds:   West
Speed:  15-18 Knots
Gusting:   20-22
Wave:  1-2  Cross chop, whitecaps
Racers:  Holly, Leland, Sandy, Emmett, Ledyard, Jeff Federson
Course:  Set up on the far right and raced up to the North side of Misery Island (mark in line with West beach).

We where able to get three races in and stopped after pure exhaustion.

Race one;  W/L  Twice around
Holly decided to bring out her daughter, so their combined weight was still under the 225 design weight. However, she drained a good ten gallons of water at the dock before racing ( does that mean she beat us with a full bilge in the NA’s ?  - ahh!).  She sailed some good races and achieved 1,1,1 – however your Fleet Captain did try to challenge her grip and was set to do it in the first race, until I flipped - crashed and burned at 25mph – on the second downwind leg. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the last few seconds of pure speed – I allowed Sandy and Leland to get by me.

Race two  W/L Twice Around
Holly and Leland fought the wind shifting back and forth and managed to do well. I was so tired from the first race, I can’t remember who did what.

Race Three W/L  Once Around
I had the most spectacular start, only to proudly go up too fast and proceed to capsize on the line. As I stood on the centerboard, I cried for joy and laughed. There is nothing like pushing sailing to the edge and having fun. I can in dead last and enjoyed every moment. Results should be up on the web at some point this week.

What an AWESOME DAY… These are the days you realize why you boat this boat, why you come out for every race, and why you love sailing. Reaching off the wind and literally flying across the water…

A special Thanks to Mr. David McCue for using all his resources to set a great course and watch over us at the windward mark. David  - I have a boat for you!

MEGABYTES

As most of you may know, several years ago several of the club members put up the money to buy a club boat, whose tongue-in-cheek christened name is EXTORTION. This boat is available to ANY member or member’s child of strong sailing ability to race. The boat is also available to sail off race day at any time. As the Fleet Captain of the Megabytes, I have purchased one extra boat; and by the time the racing starts should have bought another two. These boats will be available to skilled sailors only - as my goal is to sell them to you for basically what I paid.
The idea is to build up a fleet of dedicated, focused, fun loving sailors who enjoy competitive sailing yet only have a few days a summer to get out and race. Ownership is the only way long term. We have 9 hulls of active local sailors and 2 non members that are owners, who come out to race. With the addition of 3 more hulls that will give us a great summer line up of 14 boats. Remember theses boats are “campaigned”, so the boat wins the trophy.

My hope is that, with gas hovering at $US 6+ at the docks, more of you may find the sound of the wind rushing past the sails more enjoyable that the sound of your prop grinding through hundred dollar fill-ups.

Hey, wow, sailing is back – It is a Green activity. So, come offset your carbon footprint on race day!

Remember that AUG 2- 3 is the 2nd Racing for the North American Megabyte Championship. The boat manufacturer has provided a trophy and also a first prize of a complete sailing outfit, comprised of hat, shorty wetsuit, racing short pants, kneepads, sailing gloves and sailing boots. Next year I hope that ESPN will be filming and prizes will be donated by Rolex.
